Ruto Defends Empathy Amid Criticism

President William Ruto has firmly defended his administration against accusations of lacking empathy during national crises. Speaking during an X Space conversation on Friday, Ruto highlighted the government’s proactive measures in response to various disasters, including the recent floods and the anti-Finance Bill protests.

In response to an X user who accused him of failing to show empathy, Ruto pointed out the government’s comprehensive response to the recent floods. “For the first time, when people were evacuated due to floods, they were resettled,” Ruto emphasized. He explained that those living in riparian areas received Sh10,000 to relocate safely.

Ruto also detailed his direct involvement, noting that he convened three Cabinet meetings during the flood crisis and personally visited affected areas, including Mukuru kwa Njenga. The government spent nearly Sh400 million to support those impacted by the floods. “The government has been at the forefront of response in various issues,” he stated.

Additionally, Ruto promised that flood victims would be prioritized in the upcoming social housing program, ensuring long-term support and stability for those affected.

The President’s defense came amid a broader discussion about his administration’s handling of the anti-Finance Bill protests, during which lives were lost. Critics argued that his response was delayed and insufficiently empathetic. However, Ruto maintained that his government acted promptly and responsibly.

During the X Space conversation, host Osama Otero shared his harrowing experience of being abducted by police officers, highlighting concerns about extra-judicial killings. Addressing these issues, Ruto refuted claims of widespread killings in Githurai, asserting that the reported figures were exaggerated. “I will never say anything that is not factual. Saying 200 people were killed in Githurai is not factual,” he said, inviting families of the alleged victims to come forward.

Ruto’s engagement with the public on X Space underscores his commitment to transparency and addressing citizens’ concerns directly. His defense of the government’s empathy highlights efforts to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions to those affected by disasters.
