Raila Odinga Advocates for Revisiting the Bomas Draft Constitution

Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition party leader Raila Odinga has called for a review of the 2010 constitution of Kenya, advocating for the original Bomas draft to be reconsidered. Speaking at the funeral of Advocate Evans Oruenjo Umidha in Siaya on Saturday, July 27, 2024, Raila highlighted significant amendments made to the constitution during its second revision in Naivasha.

“These are crucial issues that need to be discussed. But first, there is the issue of governance. We have a new constitution, but we are not really following that constitution. There are issues that were still pending. Kenyans met in the Bomas of Kenya and deliberated for a long time and came up with a very progressive constitution,” Raila stated.

The ODM leader emphasized the need to revisit the Bomas draft constitution, suggesting that it be brought back for review and necessary adjustments. “That constitution was to some extent discarded during the second Naivasha process. We need to go back to the Bomas constitution, put it back on the table, and see what needs to be cleaned up so that we can have a progressive constitution,” Raila asserted.

Raila on the Demands of Generation Z

After the funeral in Siaya, Raila reiterated his stance on his official X account, emphasizing the need for a new Kenya and expressing support for the demands of Generation Z. “We want a new Kenya. The people of Kenya deserve a new Kenya. We support the demands of Gen Z; they are the demands of Kenyans. Our proposed way forward is to meet in Bomas and reset Kenya for the prosperity of all,” Raila said in his statement.

Raila’s comments reflect ongoing concerns about governance and constitutional adherence in Kenya, highlighting the need for a renewed focus on the foundational principles agreed upon during the Bomas discussions. His support for the younger generation’s demands underscores a broader call for progressive reforms and national unity.
