Drama Unfolds in UDA Party: Supporters of Cleophas Malala Clash with Self-Declared SG Joe Khalende

In a dramatic turn of events, tensions have escalated within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, leading to a physical altercation between supporters of the current Secretary General, Cleophas Malala, and those of Joe Khalende, who has declared himself as the new party Secretary General.

The incident follows the circulation of a controversial letter on social media, falsely alleging the resignation of Malala. In a swift response, Malala dismissed the letter as ‘propaganda,’ reaffirming his position and commitment to the party. He emphasized that UDA remains focused on supporting President William Ruto in fulfilling his campaign promises.

“Ignore propaganda. The party is stable and focused on helping President William Ruto achieve his agenda for Kenya. Chama iko Imara,” Malala posted on X.

However, the situation took a more serious turn on Tuesday when a group of UDA members, led by Advocate Joe Khalende, stormed the party headquarters, claiming to have ousted Malala. They accused Malala of opposing President Ruto’s plans to form a broad-based government.

Khalende boldly declared himself the new Secretary General, promising to restore the party to its members. “He is against the formation of a broad-based government, and I’m here to confirm that he is no longer the secretary general of the UDA party. I, Joe Khalende, will be taking over as the Secretary General of the UDA party,” Khalende stated.

The declaration by Khalende did not sit well with Malala’s supporters. Reports indicate that a group of Malala’s loyalists confronted Khalende, leading to a physical altercation. Witnesses described chaotic scenes as supporters from both sides clashed, with some individuals sustaining injuries.

The events have raised concerns about the stability and unity within the UDA party, which is currently the ruling party in Kenya. The internal conflict comes at a critical time as the party seeks to solidify its position and deliver on its promises to the electorate.

As the dust settles, it remains to be seen how the UDA leadership will handle the fallout from this incident. The party’s ability to manage internal dissent and maintain cohesion will be crucial in navigating the challenges ahead and in supporting President Ruto’s agenda.

For now, party members and supporters are urged to remain calm and await official communications from the UDA leadership regarding the way forward. The focus, as reiterated by Malala, is on delivering the promises made to the Kenyan people and ensuring the party remains united and strong.
