A tragic road accident occurred on the Eldoret-Nakuru highway near the Salgaa area around 4 am on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of 13 people. The accident involved a Coast Bus traveling from Kakamega to Mombasa and a private car.

The accident, which took place on a notorious stretch of road near Migaa, happened when the bus reportedly lost its brakes while navigating a steep section of the highway. The bus crashed into a private car before veering off the road and landing in a ditch. The impact of the collision led to the immediate death of 11 passengers from the bus and two individuals in the private car.

Rescue operations, led by the Kenya Red Cross and local police, are ongoing, with fears that more bodies might still be trapped in the wreckage. So far, 55 other passengers have sustained various injuries and are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals, including Molo and Coptic Hospitals.

Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati confirmed the involvement of multiple emergency response teams working to rescue any remaining survivors and retrieve the bodies of the deceased.

The accident site is notorious for frequent and deadly road accidents, and this incident is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions in the area. The Kenya Red Cross has been actively providing assistance on the scene and has confirmed the transportation of 36 injured individuals to hospitals.

This tragic incident underscores the persistent dangers of the Salgaa stretch, where numerous fatal accidents have occurred over the years, prompting renewed calls for improved road safety measures.
