The Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) are set to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the Kenya Air Force (KAF), celebrating a remarkable 60-year journey of aviation excellence, humanitarian service, and historic achievements. This milestone event will spotlight KAF’s significant contributions to Kenya’s aviation development and its steadfast commitment to national security and humanitarian efforts.

The Kenya Air Force was officially established on June 1, 1964, but its roots trace back to World War II, when Kenya served as a strategic base for Allied air operations under the East African Royal Air Force (EARAF). This historic foundation paved the way for KAF’s evolution into a formidable and independent air force post-independence.
Transformative Journey and Modern Achievements
Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, in a statement leading up to Saturday’s celebrations, highlighted KAF’s transformation from a modest fleet tasked with reconnaissance and transport to a sophisticated force equipped with state-of-the-art aircraft. “The KAF’s journey is marked by adaptability and innovation, meeting changing security landscapes with advanced capabilities,” Duale noted.
He elaborated on the KAF’s crucial roles in peacekeeping missions, disaster relief operations, and aerial patrols that safeguard Kenya’s borders and national interests. The acquisition of modern fighter jets and transport planes has significantly enhanced KAF’s operational capacity, supported by specialized units dedicated to training and maintenance.

KAF Commander Major General Fatuma Ahmed praised the force as a pillar of strength and security over the past six decades. “As we commemorate this significant milestone, we honor the legacy of our predecessors who laid the foundation of what the Kenya Air Force is today,” Major General Ahmed said.
