Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports CS Ababu Namwamba defended the Finance Bill 2024 amid boos during Fred Omondi’s tribute show, “The Last Laugh”. In a statement on Saturday, Ababu expressed his belief that once emotions settle, people will recognize the necessity of contributing to the nation’s development, including paying taxes.

“I was quite pleased to come face to face with some of our fellow citizens opposed to the #FinanceBill2024,” Ababu said. “When emotions settle, blinkers fall off and fact sifted from fiction, reality will dawn: the reality that we have a country to build, a task in which each of us have a role, including the responsibility to pay taxes for national self-sustenance.”

Despite the hostile reception, Ababu stressed that the creative economy is a central pillar in the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda. He highlighted that the Finance Bill will enable initiatives aimed at developing the sector, with several projects set to launch next month under the Talanta Hela flagship.

“Finance Bill will facilitate robust initiatives like the transformative #WhozNext project for Kenyan creatives, which we are rolling out next month under the Talanta Hela flagship. Kenya tunajenga pamoja.”

The tribute show at Carnivore Simba Saloon was held in honor of comedian and singer Fred Omondi, who tragically died in a road accident. The event was attended by Kenyans who gathered to pay their respects, including Fred’s brother, comedian and activist Eric Omondi.

Ababu encountered a challenging audience as he attempted to speak, with the crowd booing him and chanting anti-Ruto slogans. Churchill intervened in an attempt to calm the situation, but the atmosphere remained tense.
