Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja was pelted with stones during his visit to Toi Market, which had suffered a devastating fire incident on the morning of August 3, 2024. The fire, which began around 1 am, razed a significant portion of the market, leaving thousands of traders counting heavy losses.

Governor Sakaja had visited the site to assess the damage and to pledge support for the rebuilding efforts. However, tensions were high as frustrated traders, who had lost their livelihoods, expressed their anger and dissatisfaction with the response to the fire. Some traders alleged that the firefighting efforts were hampered by poor access routes and insufficient water supply from the firefighting trucks.

The market, located in Kibra, has been a frequent victim of fires, with this being the fourth major incident in recent years. The Governor assured the traders that his administration would help them rebuild and provide immediate relief in the form of food and materials. He also promised to decentralize fire services and improve access routes within informal settlements to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Despite these assurances, the frustrations of the affected traders boiled over, leading to the pelting incident, highlighting the urgent need for effective and timely interventions in disaster management.
